What Is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any issue involving the teeth, gums, or jaw that requires immediate attention to stop bleeding, alleviate pain, or prevent further damage.
Common dental emergencies include:
- Severe toothache or throbbing pain
- Knocked out (avulsed) tooth
- Cracked, broken, or chipped teeth
- Abscess or swelling in the face/jaw
- Lost crown, filling, or bridge
- Injury to the mouth, gums, or tongue
- Bleeding that doesn’t stop
- Broken dentures or dental appliances
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Toothache or Swelling:
Rinse with warm water, floss gently to remove debris, and take over-the-counter pain relievers. Call us immediately if the pain persists or worsens.
Knock-Out Tooth:
Gently rinse the tooth without touching the root. Try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk or saliva. Call us right away — time is critical (ideally within 30 minutes).
Broken or Chipped Tooth:
Save any broken pieces. Rinse your mouth and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Call us for urgent care.
Lost Filling or Crown:
Keep the crown if you can find it. Avoid chewing on that side and schedule a visit as soon as possible.
Abscess or Swelling:
These infections can spread and become serious. Call us immediately if you notice swelling, pus, or a pimple-like bump on your gums.
